The saddest thing I've ever seen was a man eating alone in a tiny restaurant in Cornwall. I was seven, and it was the first time I'd ever imagined someone else's pain. It was then I understood how my mom could cry so easily at game shows!

He's got brain damage. He's in a coma. He could die, and he's not even eighteen. A woman's crying. He's not sad, yet. He doesn't know what's happened, yet. His eyes don't seem open, don't seem closed. His mind seems empty. The woman keeps crying, and he's not even eighteen.

I don't know if I could have kept a straight face, though, when his family told me he fell off a pogo stick.
