The White Shoe Irregular:
It was fun while it lasted.

I have read as long as I have been able to read.

Before that, my mother —
a woman of no advanced education —
recited to me from memory.

I have never considered
POETRY
an intrinsically difficult art.

Pleasures are open to any person
with the inclination to
savor
(justly obsessed with the difficulty)
the sheer immediacy.

Study may deepen,
training refine but
the appetite
itself
is not an especially sophisticated thing.
